retreading old ground

Tonight was the launch of Terryland gig number one – and I was quite surprised. I’ve spent most of Christmas dreading these gigs not least becuase I have to go back and learn old shows and I’m inherently too lazy for that, but with the gigs being on 2nd/3rd Jan in the middle of credit crunch and the weather is so cold that surely no one would leave the house I regretted agreeing to them mere moments after putting the phone down.

when my manager Jon told me the other day I had just 8 tickets sold for tonight I was all set to pull it, cancel it, walk away with my tail between my legs and hope that noone remembered the big mailouts, facebook updates and nice write up in time out all about it.

But I didn’t and so showed up, unsure if Romantic Comedy was remembered or not. And to my jaw dropping amazement the bloody thing had gone and sold out. And suddenly had to raise me game – these people had come out on a night when Zane Lowe’s Rude Tube was on the telly – and that’s showing the best internet clips of 2008.

Romantic Comedy went amazingly well, I mostly remembered it, and the amount of microphones and tech shit (all macs I’m proud to say) knocking about meant it looked a bit more like a pet shop boys gig than a normal terry gig.

It was odd, this show was performed to probably 15 people on its best night in Edinburgh 2005, and I was a fairly new comic also back then, it was so enjoyable doing it to a bigger and appreciative crowd. Recordings will be up as soon as I’ve edited them. I may even do some drawings.

Missed Connections went a bit odd – I’ve done it so many times that I didn’t worry so much about re-learning it. And I use powerpoint for the pictures in the story, so I always know what bit is coming up as a visual aid.

That is, if I had reinstalled a little thing that allows me to do that, but I’d forgotten to and this is the first gig since I’ve upgraded my laptop. So I have to do the show blind, slightly unsure of what slide is coming next. It went ok, even if a few things popped up early. And then the video files really screwed it all up and crashed powerpoint.

It half-ruined the flow (or rather I did with my tinkering trying to fix it instead of performing) but it all worked in the end – and, as ever, the big ending soon made people forget the faffing.

This all meant the recording is probably a bit stop starty, I’ll either have to edited and re-record some bits – or make people buy the DVD – it’s as if I planned it.

come down tomorrow (saturday) for Figure 8 and Pulp boy – and no technical fuck ups (hopefully)
