The Cup

I have this new temping job. It’s going ok. But had a bit of a run in this morning. Apparently I can’t eat at the reception desk. I don’t really have a problem with this, I can see the managers point.

I was eating a banana and was told by the boss that it’s not allowed, doesn’t look very good. I’m new to the job so I didn’t retort (would rather not get fired this time), instead I just apologised and vowed to never do it again (whilst she was there). If I had have retorted I would have made the point that eating fruit at the desk can only be a good thing, setting a good example to the students that despite their youthful beer and alchopops lifestyles they should still try and fit in their five portions of fruit and veg a day. Why, look at this chap working in the reception, he is doing his job AND eating some fruit at the same time, that goes to show that fruit doesn’t have to just be at the dinner table.

But like I said, I kept quiet and a certain university’s residents may all die of scurvy in a few years…

Shortly after I was drinking coffee at the same reception area, and was then told that this too was not allowed (it doesn’t look good apparently). Now, I cannot use the argument I didn’t use for the banana as coffee isn’t very healthy. So again I apologised and vowed not to do it again (whilst she was there) but I did ask if it’s ok to drink water at the desk, she said it was.

I only asked, not because we’re supposed to drink eight glasses of water a day and me being seen to would set a good example etc (see above) but because the cups for the water are the old fashioned polystyrene ones, and the cups for the coffee are the old fashioned polystyrene ones.

The same cups

I’m just wondering how coffee looks bad and water doesn’t, when really, unless you’re really looking out for it all you can see is a cup…
